You also need exterior structural screws, stainless or coated cladding screws, three exterior-rated hinges, two correctly sized lid-support stays, optional finger-safe gap guards, and non-absorbent feet.

This is domestic garden storage, not a weatherproof chest or a rated public seat. Do not store fuel, chemicals, batteries, food or anything that requires controlled temperature or humidity.

1. Build two end frames. Join the 410 mm end rails between paired legs, one rail flush at the top and one 90 mm above the floor. Pre-drill and use structural screws appropriate to the timber.
2. Join the frames. Fit the four 1,110 mm rails between the end frames. Clamp, match the diagonals and correct any twist before fully tightening.
3. Add base supports. Fit cleats inside the lower rails, then lay six base slats with equal drainage gaps. Keep the floor removable where possible for cleaning.
4. Clad the sides. Cut front, back and end slats to the measured openings. Leave 8–12 mm ventilation gaps and keep the lowest slat above splash water.
5. Make one simple lid. Arrange five 1,180 mm slats with equal gaps and fix them from below to two cross-battens. Keep both battens inside the frame opening so the lid can close without fouling the rails.
6. Fit hinges and stays. Centre the single lid over the frame. Install three evenly spaced rear hinges and one correctly rated positive stay at each end. Follow the hardware templates and screw schedule.
7. Control pinch points. Confirm hands cannot be trapped by a falling lid. The support must hold each lid safely open; add guards or increase the rear gap if necessary.
8. Finish and place. Coat every face and end grain, cure fully, then set the bench on firm level ground. Test for rocking before loading it.

Do not rely on friction hinges unless their published rating covers the actual lid size and mass. Use positive lid stays or soft-close supports at both ends of the single lid. Keep children away during assembly and test each half repeatedly before placing anything inside.

• Round the lifting edge and provide a clear handhold.
• Stop hinge screws before they break through the seat.
• Check supports and hinges each season for corrosion or looseness.
• Never sit on an open lid or use the bench as a step.

Slatted timber cannot promise waterproof storage. Use washable, breathable bags for cushions and bring moisture-sensitive items indoors. Keep ventilation gaps open, sweep out leaf litter and raise the feet clear of standing water. Recoat when water stops beading or the finish maker recommends it.
