A stable floor-standing trough with an integrated rear trellis. Designed for peas, beans, compact cucumbers, flowering climbers or a privacy screen that never hangs over a railing.

Add two 362 × 45 × 45 mm base cleats, exterior stainless or coated screws, permeable liner, a removable drip tray where runoff matters, and exterior plant-safe finish.

02 / BUILD

Keep water moving downward.

Prepare the timber. Cut square, ease hand-contact edges and seal end grain. Reject twisted rails and split uprights.
Make two end frames. Fix the paired end boards between the front corner line and rear upright. Keep the lower edge 80 mm above the floor so the timber feet and tray remain accessible.
Join the frames. Add front and rear boards. Measure diagonals and correct the box until they match within 3 mm.
Support the base. Fix cleats inside both ends. Lay three slats across them with equal gaps of at least 8 mm. Do not seal the floor.
Add the trellis. Fix five rails between the rear uprights at 250 mm spacing, beginning above the planter rim. Pre-drill near rail ends.
Line without trapping water. Staple permeable liner to the sides, stopping above the base gaps. Pierce drainage points over the tray.
Finish and cure. Apply the selected coating before soil is added. Let it cure completely according to the maker.
Position, test, then fill. Put the empty planter in its final place, add water and confirm every drain reaches the tray. Fill with container mix without compressing it.

03 / PLANTING

Match the crop to the container.

Choose compact climbers and keep mature plant weight in mind. Tie stems with soft reusable ties. A sunny edible planter might hold two compact cucumber plants plus low herbs; peas or beans can be spaced more closely according to the seed supplier. In windier positions, choose shorter crops.

Container soil dries faster than ground soil. Check moisture with a finger before watering, feed according to the crop, and keep drainage openings clear.

04 / PLACEMENT

Freestanding means fully supported.

Keep the planter entirely on the floor and inside any balcony railing.
Confirm that the floor can safely carry the wet soil, timber and water load.
Never drill a façade or railing without written permission and a suitable fixing design.
If the empty structure rocks or can tip under a firm pull, correct the feet or proportions before filling.
